• Over the last decades, modern States have developed legal instruments to control and reduce negative anthropogenic impacts on the environment, seeking to maintain or improve the quality of life in society. The objective of this study is to systematize the main mechanisms of State intervention on the environment, by using as search method the international doctrine and current Brazilian environmental legislation. The search concludes that there are three main methods of State intervention on the environment: direct, indirect and hybrid methods. The use of one or other instrument will depend on which environmental issue to mitigate. a sistematização dos instrumentos jurídicos
