Assessment of the fertility of grapevine buds grown in the Planalto Norte Catarinense

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fertility of grapevine buds grown in the Northern Plateau region of Santa Catarina. The experiment was conducted in a commercial vineyard in Canoinhas and at the Fruit Growing Laboratory of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) Canoinhas Campus - Santa Catarina. The varieties used were Casca Dura, Grano D'Oro, Bordô, Niágara Branca, Niágara Rosada, Vênus, Poloski, BRS Isis, BRS Vitória, Ribol, and Dedo de Dama. The buds collected were organized and separated according to their position on the branch: basal buds (1st to 3rd), median buds (4th to 7th), and apical buds (8th to 10th), in phenolic foam hydrated in Styrofoam trays. The analyses performed were of the percentage of bud fertility and the average number of clusters per bud. In general, the results reinforce that the position of the bud has a significant influence on the number of clusters per bud, varying according to the variety. These data are fundamental for adjusting pruning management, aiming to maximize the productivity of different cultivars in the soil and climate conditions of the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. Mixed pruning is recommended for the Grano D'Oro, Casca Dura, Bordô, BRS Isis, BRS Vitória, Vênus, Dedo de Dama, Niágara Branca, Niágara Rosada, Ribol, and Casca Dura varieties. Short pruning is recommended for the Poloski variety.
