Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between the incidence of childhood cancer and socioeconomic indicators of agribusiness in Mato Grosso between 2007 and 2012. Method: An ecological study based on secondary data on new cancer cases reported in the Population-Based Cancer Registry and socioeconomic and environmental indicators of Gross Domestic Product per capita and the agricultural component and consumption of pesticides by municipality. The standardized average rate was calculated using the direct world population method. The normality of the variables was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the association between the indicators was calculated using Spearman's correlation. Results: 601 new cases were identified, 34.7% in the 15-19 age group, 53.5% male and 49.2% brown, with an average incidence rate of 5.59/100,000 inhabitants. A significant correlation was found between the average incidence rate and socioeconomic and environmental variables, with the highest coefficient being observed for general GDP (r= 0.424; p=0.001). Conclusion: The municipalities in Mato Grosso with a predominantly agribusiness economy also had a higher incidence of new cases of childhood cancer, thus indicating a significant association between the indicators.
