Abstract

This review analyzes Jungley Neto’s work Hermeneutical Foundations for a Critical and Dialogical Education: Paulo Freire and Hans-Georg Gadamer, considering the importance of debate and reflection on the challenges of Brazilian education in contemporary times through the articulation between Paulo Freire’s liberating pedagogy and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. For the author, the main challenges lie primarily in the realm of language. The work understands education not only as a pedagogical practice but also as a dialogical and hermeneutical experience aimed at the formation of the historical subject. In light of the Freirean critique of oppressive education and the Gadamerian notion of fusion of horizons, it argues for the importance of language contextualized to the student’s situation of understanding, in which empathy and dialogue emerge as possibilities for transforming human reality and constituting critical thought.
