Abstract

Objective: The process of referring patients from primary care to specialized care often results in a lack of continuity of care and delays in health care. In this scenario, the need for specialized care in neurology presents long waiting lines in Brazil. Few studies address the reasons for referrals to neurology in Brazil and, when performed, usually with a convenience sample of patients who manage to reach a single neurological health service. This study aims to quantify the reasons for referrals of primary care physicians to neurology in Belo Horizonte, southeastern Brazil.

Methods: It is a cohort with evaluation of all referrals from Primary Care to Neurology in Belo Horizonte, between March 2019 and July 2020. Neurologists or primary care physicians, with experience in neurology referral protocols, performed the assessment of all referrals from the public health system.

Results: There were 13,844 referrals to neurologists, or 814.35 referrals by month. Headache, epilepsy and cerebrovascular disorder were the most common reasons.

Conclusion: This work captured all referrals from the public health system to neurology in a major Brazilian city, which can provide community-based information for health policy and health education.
