Abstract

This essay highlights the institutional debate carried out by contemporary political science regarding the relationships between government systems, the quality of democracy and political instability. Taking as a field of investigation the Latin American countries that underwent democratization after the experience of authoritarian regimes in the 20th century, we attempt to ascertain to what extent the adopted presidentialism presents itself as a crucial factor in explaining recurring situations of political instability. on the continent. When exposing the considerations made by specialized literature based on empirical findings, it appears that the statement that presidentialism is the cause for the aforementioned instability cannot be sustained, and it is therefore necessary to take into account other institutional and political variables for a more detailed explanation of this reality.
