Abstract

Given the precarious conditions of the Brazilian prison system, it is essential to evaluate the practices used for the rehabilitation of inmates under state custody. This research aims to present data on the application of the deprivation of liberty sentence and its non-rehabilitative effect on inmates held in the Barra do Bugres-MT public jail in 2023. To achieve this, we conducted a field study where we accessed statistical data revealing recidivism rates of the detainees at Barra do Bugres. This allowed us to reflect on the non-rehabilitative nature of the deprivation of liberty sentence. The study employs a mixed-methods approach (qualitative-quantitative) to support our analysis.
