Abstract

Considering the scarcity of specific studies in the area of Physical Education that deal with the leisure of people with disabilities, this research aimed to investigate what students with disabilities (Down Syndrome) from the Espaço Com-Vivências Project at the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) did in the weekly routine and weekend routine to check whether or not there were leisure activities in the daily lives of these people with disabilities and to check how often people with Down Syndrome participated in leisure activities. This is qualitative and quantitative research and the instrument adopted was the semi-structured interview. The sample consisted of 22 family members of adults with Down Syndrome (DS) with a mean age of 51.4 ± 10 years, men and women. The sample delimitation was for convenience. The textual content resulting from the interviews was subjected to textual data analysis, The data revealed that the activities of people with disabilities in their weekly routine, most of the time, were “going to the Espaço Com-Vivências Project”, “going to school”, “going to the speech therapist”, “going to the psychopedagogue”; and the activities carried out on weekends basically included “going to the mall”, “staying at home”, “visiting family”, “eating out”. We conclude that the leisure activities of people with disabilities (Down Syndrome) of the Espaço Com-Vivências Project at the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) revolve around the environments in which they feel included, namely, the family environment, the church and the shopping center.
