Why do languages change? Why do we vary?

Linguistic change and variation are complex phenomena that occur across all natural languages, reflecting social, historical, and cognitive dynamics. This article examines the factors underlying these processes, aiming to explore consolidated concepts of linguistic change and variation while analyzing how individuals differ in their ways of speaking. Our goal is to revisit the contributions of Sociolinguistics, with an emphasis on the construct of Linguistic Variation and Change as proposed by Weinreich, Labov, and Herzog (2006), and to explore how this approach interacts with other linguistic currents, such as Structuralism, Generativism, Functionalism, and Cognitive Linguistics. In this context, we also discuss the levels of social perception and evaluation of linguistic phenomena (Labov, 2008[1972]) and the urbanization continuum presented by Bortoni-Ricardo (2004). Furthermore, we examine how linguistic forms intertwine with social dynamics in the choice of speech phenomena, highlighting how these choices are indexed to the social and cultural structures that shape the process of linguistic variation.
